'My work consists of teaching the Dutch language to non-native speakers.'

Can you explain as simply as possible what your work entails?

As an NT2 (Dutch as a Second Language) teacher, my work consists of teaching the Dutch language to non-native speakers. Here are some core aspects of my work:

  • Lesson planning and preparation:
    • Designing detailed lesson plans appropriate to students' language levels and learning needs.
    • Create or select appropriate teaching materials such as books, worksheets, audio and video materials.
  • Teaching:
    • Teaching language skills: focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing.
    • Using interactive and communicative methods to teach the language in a practical and engaging way.
    • Teaching both small groups and individual students, adapted to their learning style and pace.
  • Guidance and support:
    • Providing constructive feedback on students' work.
    • Regularly evaluate student progress with tests and other assessment tools.
    • Guiding students in their study planning and career orientation, focusing on integration and future in the Netherlands.
  • Administration and documentation:
    • Documenting student progress.
    • Prepare regular reports for internal purposes and communication with municipalities, employers or agencies.
  • Professional development:
    • Regularly attend courses, workshops and conferences to keep abreast of the latest methods in language teaching.
    • Sharing experiences and best practices with colleagues.
  • Cultural and social integration:
    • Support students in their cultural integration by familiarising them with Dutch norms, values and customs.
    • Working with local organisations and communities to help students find their way in society.

What do you like most about your work?

  • Seeing people grow.

Do you think speaking multiple languages is important? And if so, why?

Yes, and here are some reasons why it matters:

  • Understanding and empathy:
    • Empathy: Learning a second or third language yourself helps to understand students' challenges, which fosters empathy.
    • Cultural awareness: Multilingualism enhances understanding of different cultures and helps create an inclusive learning environment.
  • Communication and explanations:
    • Helps explain complex grammar in students' native language when needed.
    • Quickly translate important information, especially for beginners.
  • Motivation and commitment:
    • Students feel more understood when their teacher makes an effort to speak their language.
    • Makes lessons more relevant by using examples and comparisons from different cultures.
  • Professional skills:
    • Multilingualism enriches teachers' language skills and makes them more flexible.
    • Increases employability, especially in multicultural educational institutions.
  • Intercultural communication:
    • Increase ability to communicate effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.
    • Can help manage conflict by understanding cultural nuances.

What fact about language acquisition should all parents know?

  • Importance of early exposure to language:
    • Children are able to learn multiple languages without hindering their development.
    • Interactive conversations and reading aloud encourage vocabulary and language comprehension.
    • Patience and support are crucial for children's language development.

Would you advise parents to teach their child(ren) multiple languages?

Absolutely! Here are some reasons why multilingualism is valuable:

  • Cognitive benefits:
    • Improved brain function and cognitive flexibility.
    • Better ability to concentrate.

    • Multilingual children understand language structures better, which helps in learning other languages.
    • Perform better in school, especially in reading and writing.
  • Social-emotional benefits:
    • Better cultural knowledge and appreciation.
    • Stronger family ties through learning the mother tongue of parents or grandparents.
  • Economic benefits:
    • Multilingualism is a valuable skill in the labour market.
    • Increased flexibility and career opportunities.
  • Personal enrichment:
    • Fosters a lifelong curiosity and love of learning.

Amber

About me

Hey, I'm Amber and co-founder of Jungle the Bungle. I spent over six years in the media worked as an (online) marketer and campaign manager. That's how I met Carolina and how my dream of being an entrepreneur came true. I currently freelance for various companies that want to make impact and be more conscious of business. I also bring this knowledge to the impact strategy of Jungle the Bungle.

What I love about this concept is that we are going for equity for all children. Voor every product sold, we also donate one to another child. Children are no longer dependent on what languages parents speak, but can learn a language themselves in a fun way through the app.

By the way, it offers so many opportunities to be able to speak multiple languages. The younger you are, the easier it is. I have always had a passion for travelling and different cultures and therefore also with languages. Besides, I find children such a fun target group because they are full of imagination and have a big world of experiences. We are planning a lot of great expansions that will be even more fun for young children. So keep a close eye on the website!

Carolina

About me

Hi, I am Carolina and the creator of Jungle the Bungle. Because of my Spanish mother and Dutch father, I was raised bilingual. This allowed me to experience for myself how special it is to speak a second language. The idea for Jungle the Bungle came about because young children learn languages effortlessly. As a mother of young twins at the time, I saw that there were few fun and easy ways to teach young children a new language. So the idea of developing something myself was born. There are now many studies showing that young children learn a new language incredibly easily. Until the age of 10, the part in your brain with which you learn languages is super active, after that it declines somewhat. After age 15, it is just as 'difficult' to learn a new language as for an adult. Am super proud that so many parents and children are made happy by Jungle the Bungle and that we can contribute to the positive development of young children.
