Introduction
This is the Privacy Statement of Jungle the Bungle. This Privacy Statement applies to everyone who visits or uses our platform. Our platform is accessible via the website, the Jungle the Bungle app and the web version thereof.
Our user’s privacy is of the utmost importance to us. The protection of (personal) data of minors plays a central role in this. Below, we explain what information we collect from our users, our legal basis for doing so and how we handle data processing. For example, when minors play games through Jungle the Bungle, no one else needs to know which games they played or what their score is. We also explain when we may share data with third parties and how you retain ownership of your data.
We recommend reading the entire Privacy Statement carefully. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via the contact form on our website.

1. What is Jungle the Bungle?
Jungle the Bungle helps children learn new languages through play. We do this partly offline through multilingual children’s books, but primarily online via an app and a web version thereof. The Jungle the Bungle app and web version consist of a variety of games that help children learn new words and (short) sentences. Fun comes first at Jungle the Bungle.
2. Jungle the Bungle Membership
When you register for a membership with Jungle the Bungle as a parent or on behalf of a school, you are required to create a personal account for yourself (the Parent Account) or for the school (the School Account), as well as an associated account for the minor (the Child Account). We require you to create a separate Child account for each minor that is registered.
Accounts
To create a Parent Account, we ask you to provide the following personal data:
- First and last name;
- Email address;
- Password.
To create a Child Account (for Parents), we ask you to provide the following personal data:
- Child’s first name or a nickname;
- Base language;
- Target language.
To create a School Account (for teachers), we will ask teachers to provide the following personal data:
- School name;
- Town or City / Place of business
- First and last name of the teachers who access the dashboard;
- Email addresses of the teachers who access the dashboard.
To create a Child Account (for schools), the teacher is also asked to provide the following personal data:
- First name and (optional) last name;
- Base language;
- Target language.
Financial Data
For memberships, we also process financial data. At Jungle the Bungle, parent memberships are purchased via the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. This is done entirely online and securely through the relevant third-party payment provider(s). Please review the privacy terms of the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store for further information.
Jungle the Bungle invoices school licences directly to the school or foundation. We use contact details (name and email address) solely to process payments.
The use of this personal data is therefore necessary for the performance of the contract between Jungle the Bungle and a parent, or between Jungle the Bungle and the school.
3. Accounts
School Account
Within the School Account, it is possible to monitor the progress of registered Child Accounts. In addition to the mandatory personal data described in Chapter 2, the following personal data may optionally be provided:
- Address;
- Telephone number.
The data provided can be updated at any time. The address may automatically appear, if an address was provided at the time of membership registration.
Child Account
A Child Account can be created per child via the Parent Account or School Account. The Child Account can be viewed in full through the School Account. Of course, when children play Jungle the Bungle via their Child Account, they have no access to the School Account.
Parents can create a maximum of three Child Accounts within the Parent Account. For each Child Account, the child’s first name (or nickname) may be entered. In addition, the base language and target language may be entered. The base language is the language the child already speaks; all instructions are given in the base language and the settings are provided in this base language.
Jungle the Bungle or teachers can create the required number of accounts for pupils within the School Account. Jungle the Bungle can do this for all schools. Teachers at a given school can only view the data for that specific school.
All games are in the target language: the language the child wishes to learn. The use of this data is therefore necessary for the performance of the contract between Jungle the Bungle and parents or schools.
Jungle the Bungle Gameplay
When children play Jungle the Bungle, we process the following data:
- Which games are played;
- Gameplay duration;
- How many questions the child has answered correctly or incorrectly;
- The language level and progress. This is determined by means of an algorithm: with multiple correct answers the level goes up; with multiple incorrect answers it goes down.
We also use this data within the School Account, to provide schools with an overview of their pupil’s use of Jungle the Bungle. The processing of this data is necessary for the performance of the contract between Jungle the Bungle and the schools. Without this information, we cannot provide insight into individual results or progress.
4. Contact with Jungle the Bungle
Please contact our customer service team if you have questions or concerns about Jungle the Bungle. Please note that we will then process your contact details and your question or complaint. We will search our systems to check whether you have a Jungle the Bungle membership. We may also ask you for further information if we consider this necessary to answer the question or resolve the complaint.
Any data collected or processed in this respect is processed to answer the question and resolve the complaint. This processing of your data is necessary for the protection of the legitimate interests of Jungle the Bungle, or necessary to perform the contract. Specifically, this concerns our interest in being able to serve you efficiently and to optimise Jungle the Bungle’s customer service. The complaint may also concern the content of the contract. The information provided is also stored in our systems and used to analyse, optimise, and improve Jungle the Bungle (see also Chapter 9: Research and Analysis).
Customer Experience
In addition, Jungle the Bungle sometimes offers the opportunity to participate in customer satisfaction surveys and evaluations. To take part in these surveys, we will ask for your contact details. We welcome your feedback on how we can improve our services. Your responses may also be used for personalised tips and information. The processing of your data in the context of these surveys is carried out on the basis of our legitimate interest in optimising our services and tailoring them to our users’ preferences.
5. Offers, Newsletters, Reports and Service Messages
Offers and Newsletters
We also use your data to send (commercial) messages with offers or promotions, and news about new games, collaborations, tips and tricks. We aim to align the content of the newsletter, the website, and our other communications with your preferences in terms of language and games.
To personalise these messages, we may use your name, the name of the school, and the name of the child.
To ensure that offers and promotions are appropriate, we may make use gameplay data, such as the last time the child played Jungle the Bungle and which games the child has played.
You can opt out of these messages at the time of registering your Parent Account or School Account. In addition, all our commercial messages contain an unsubscribe link. This data is processed due to the customer relationship with Parents and Schools. In this context, we are permitted to send you, as a customer, messages to keep you as appropriately informed as possible about our services.
Reports
Jungle the Bungle generates reports to provide insight into the child’s use of Jungle the Bungle and their results. For this purpose, Jungle the Bungle uses gameplay information such as which games the child has played and how many words the child has learnt. You can also view how long the child has practised a particular word category or topic and when the child last played Jungle the Bungle. The information is made available in the teacher’s dashboard.
Monitoring progress forms part of the service; therefore the legal basis for processing this data is performance of our contract with you.
Service Messages
We also keep you informed of developments to our service. If, for example, an extension becomes available or there is an update, Jungle the Bungle will notify you by email. It is not possible to opt out of these service messages or of messages confirming a purchase. The use of your email address for these messages is necessary to inform you about the content of our service (and thereby the contract with you). Examples include reports, updates and upgrades, requests for reviews, etc.
Email Tracking
In our email messages, we use technologies to measure interactions with messages (e.g., opening an email or activating links). This is done by means of so-called pixels embedded in the messages. We process the following data with the use of these pixels: name and email address of the recipient, confirmation that the recipient has received and opened the email, whether and on which links were clicked, the recipient’s IP address, and the recipient’s browser and operating system. This allows us to optimise and further develop the content of our email messages. We use the data in aggregated form and solely for general statistical evaluations. The data is not combined with your other data.
The processing of this data is necessary for the protection of our legitimate interests, namely to analyse the reach and relevance of our messages.
In the UK, we carry out this email-interaction tracking solely on the basis of your prior consent, given via your email preferences or cookie settings. You may withdraw consent at any time.
6. Relevant Advertisements
This applies to consumers only, not to schools and/or foundations:
Unless you have objected to this, Jungle the Bungle shares your email address with Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google to show you relevant advertisements from Jungle the Bungle. These advertising networks compare the email addresses we provide with existing Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google profiles. If you have an account with Google, LinkedIn, and/or Facebook, you will subsequently be shown advertisements for similar products and/or services from Jungle the Bungle. We naturally never share more data than described here, and we never share any data relating to the child.
You can opt out of this processing via the cookie settings on the website.
Via the app, we currently do not engage in any marketing tracking. We only share data with Google. The data is stored in GA4. The retention period is 14 months, but this data cannot be traced back to an individual person.
In the UK, we will only share your personal data with third-party ad networks for behavioural advertising if you have provided us your consent.
For our US-based customers and users, we provide a manual opt-out process, allowing them to request that this personal data not be shared with third-party advertising partners.
7. Automatically Generated Information
For Jungle the Bungle to function optimally (for example, to display pages correctly and to secure the website and app), we require certain information. We therefore automatically collect information about your browsing behaviour during your use of Jungle the Bungle. This information consists of a portion of the IP address (the last three digits are replaced with ‘XXX’ so that the IP address cannot be traced back to an individual), the type of browser (the computer programme used to view internet pages), the computer system you are using, the pages you visit, and we place cookies.
We use this information, amongst other things, to tailor our service to your wishes as closely as possible and to resolve technical problems and security issues.
For example, we use the IP address, account number, and pages/cookies to investigate any unusual situations or to interrupt hacking attempts. If, for instance, we suddenly detect a high level of activity on a particular account across multiple configurations, we are able to take appropriate action.
We use browser data and computer system information to determine how many users are using a particular configuration and to adapt the platform accordingly. In addition, this information helps us to resolve problems, as we can see precisely in which situation issues arose.
This processing of your information is necessary for the protection of the legitimate interests of Jungle the Bungle, namely our interest in securing the platforms properly and making them as user-friendly as possible.
We also use this information to compile statistical data. See also Chapter 9 (Research and Analysis). Where automatically generated information is collected by means of cookies, Chapter 8 (Cookies) also applies.
8. Cookies
We use cookies for Jungle the Bungle. In addition to the provisions of this Privacy Statement, the provisions of Jungle the Bungle’s Cookie Statement apply. The Cookie Statement sets out which cookies are used and what the purpose of those cookies is. The Cookie Statement can be found here.
9. Research and Analysis
Jungle the Bungle strives to deliver services of the highest quality. To this end, we continually analyse, maintain, secure and optimise our platform so to allow us to make any adjustments where necessary.
We may use your data for this purpose. Examples include:
- The number of children registered;
- The number of games played;
- The gameplay duration per game;
- The duration of each visit to Jungle the Bungle;
- Which games are played and what the scores are;
- Which pages have been visited on Jungle the Bungle.
The processing of the above data is based on our legitimate interest in improving the quality of our platform and our services. Only specifically designated employees of Jungle the Bungle and our authorized app developers (Hulan) have access to your data for this purpose. The research data is always aggregated. This means that the data cannot be traced back personally to you or the child. We always use pseudonymised data for this purpose, and where possible anonymised data.
10. How Long Do We Retain Your Data?
We retain personal data for as long as necessary for the purposes described above, or to comply with statutory (retention) obligations. The retention period therefore depends on the nature of the data and the purposes for which Jungle the Bungle processes it. We have set out the retention periods per category in an internal retention policy, summarised below.
- We retain personal data for as long as we have a contract in place.
- Following termination of the contract, we retain the Parent Account, School Account and Child Account for 1 year, to allow reactivation of the membership without account data having been deleted. After 1 year, we delete the Parent Account, School Account and Child Account, and therefore also delete the data relating to games played by the child, dates, gameplay time, practice results, and reports.
- We retain names, the name of the school, the email address of schools/parents. We retain this data for up to 12 months after termination of the contract. We retain this data (on the basis of our legitimate interest) in order to send commercial messages and to know when we should stop doing so, for example because the child is no longer of primary school age. You can of course always opt out of our messages or request that we delete your data.
- We retain the contract for a minimum of 5 years after termination of the contract.
- We retain financial data relating to the contract, such as invoices, proof of payments, method of payment, and account number, for a minimum of 7 years to comply with fiscal legislation.
- We retain complaints we receive for up to 3 years after receipt of the complaint.
11. When Do We Share Your Data?
We share your personal data with third parties in certain cases. We do this only where necessary for our service and the purposes described in this Privacy Statement.
On our behalf. In order to perform the contract with you, we share your data with parties that process your data on our behalf. Your data is only used for the performance of that assignment. An example of this is the hosting of the central Jungle the Bungle database. Jungle the Bungle has concluded data processing agreements with these parties, setting out the (security) measures they must take to protect your data.
External service providers. We may share your data with service providers with whom we collaborate and who qualify as independent data controllers. Examples include financial service providers, legal advisers, consultants, and auditors. We always assess in advance which personal data it is necessary to provide to these service providers and make additional arrangements regarding the allocation of responsibilities for your data where necessary.
Legal obligation. We may disclose your data to third parties:
- To comply with legal obligations, such as court orders;
- Where we are obliged to do so, for example in the event of a dispute or unlawful use of your account;
- Where necessary to cooperate with authorities such as the police or tax authorities;
- Where necessary for us to protect our rights, such as in enforcing our Terms and Conditions.
Business transaction. We may provide your personal data where necessary in connection with a merger, (partial) sale or (partial) transfer of our assets. We will always notify you in good time if a business transaction takes place involving your personal data.
Consent. In other cases, but only where we have specifically requested your consent.
12. Protection of Your Data
We place great importance on the proper security of your data. We have put in place appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your data against loss or unlawful processing. We secure our systems in accordance with current information security standards and have also coordinated this with our partners.
We consider it important that your data is stored as far as possible within the European Economic Area (“EEA”). Where your data is stored outside the EEA, we ensure that this is done in accordance with applicable privacy legislation and that the required level of protection is guaranteed. For example, we have signed the EU Model Clauses with these parties or base the transfer on an adequacy decision.
13. What Are Your Rights?
Response
We aim to respond to your request as quickly as possible and in any event within one month. It is possible that we may need more time, but this will never be more than an additional two months. We will always inform you in good time of any such extension.
You can submit a request by emailing info@junglethebungle.com. Please include the email address by which you are registered with us, so that we can be certain that the data you are requesting belongs to you.
Where we are unable to determine clearly what your request concerns, we may ask you to specify your request. If we are not certain who the request is from, we may ask you for additional information or to identify yourself.
It is possible that we may decline your request, for example because we are unable or not obliged (as a matter of law) to comply with it. We will also inform you of any refusal.
In addition to the rights listed below, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (EU) or the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO, UK). California residents may also contact the California Attorney General.
We hope that will not be necessary!
Right of Access
You have the right to submit a request to find out whether we are processing personal data about you. If this is the case, we will provide you with a copy of your personal data.
Right to Rectification
You have the right to request the rectification of inaccurate data about you. Where possible, you also have the right to provide supplementary personal data in order to complete your personal data record.
You can also make these changes directly yourself in the Parent Account, School Account, or Child Account.
Right to Erasure
You have the right to request the deletion of your personal data. If your request is granted, we will delete the relevant personal data.
Right to Restriction of Processing
You have the right to request restriction of the processing of your personal data. This means that, if we agree to your request, we will not process your personal data further during the period of restriction – unless this is permitted by law.
Right to Object
You have the right to object to the processing of your personal data, for example where we process your personal data on the basis of legitimate interests. If you object, we will weigh your privacy interests against our business interests. If your interest outweighs ours, we will not process your personal data further.
Where personal data is used for direct marketing, this balancing exercise does not apply. In that case, we will no longer process your personal data for that purpose. You can object to the processing of your data for direct marketing purposes by emailing info@junglethebungle.com.
Right to Data Portability
You have the right to request data portability. We will make the data falling within this right available to you in a structured, commonly used, and machine-readable format so that you can transfer it to a third party.
Right to Withdraw Consent
Where you have given your consent to the processing of your personal data, you can withdraw that consent at any time. We will then no longer process your personal data for the purposes to which the consent relates. Withdrawal of consent does not affect the lawfulness of any processing carried out prior to withdrawal.
A request may be submitted by emailing info@junglethebungle.com. In principle, we aim to respond to your request within one month. You can also view and update your own data at any time in your Parent, School, or Child Account.
14. Minors
Jungle the Bungle enters into a contract with parents or with schools. We distinguish between parents, schools, and children when processing personal data, to ensure that children can always use Jungle the Bungle safely and without disruption. For example, we will never approach children directly for commercial activities.
For UK customers and users: As a service likely to be accessed by children, Jungle the Bungle is subject to the ICO’s Age-Appropriate Design Code (the “Children’s Code”). We are committed to the following principles: (a) the best interests of the child are a primary consideration in all data processing decisions; (b) we apply data minimisation – we collect only personal data that is strictly necessary; (c) privacy settings for Child Accounts are set to high privacy by default; (d) we do not profile children for commercial purposes; (e) we do not use nudge techniques to encourage children to share more data or weaken their privacy settings; (f) we do not use children’s personal data in ways that are detrimental to their wellbeing.
For California residents: we do not sell or share the personal information of children under the age of 13 without prior verifiable parental consent. For users between the ages of 13 and 16, we do not sell or share their personal information without their affirmative opt-in authorisation. Children are never targeted with behavioural advertising.
15. California Privacy Rights (CCPA/CPRA)
This section applies solely to residents of the State of California and supplements the rest of this Privacy Statement. It is provided pursuant to the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (CCPA), as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act of 2020 (CPRA), Cal. Civ. Code § 1798.100 et seq.
